As a first-generation student with low-income, I would use the scholarship for my tuition, textbook, and nursing fees. Since the University of Portland has such a prestigious Nursing program, I chose to go there despite the financial hardship. UP is a private institution, so my cost of attendance is about fifty-six thousand dollars a year. With such a high amount of money, my mother and I struggle to pay out of pocket despite all the federal and UP grants. After migrating from Vietnam to America at age 12, I became more ambitious and motivated to achieve high academic goals. It was an open door full of opportunities for both my mother and I. My mother has sacrificed her life by working intensively at a low-paid restaurant which I’d like to financially support her when she retires. Even though I experience financial problems, I do not want to give up my hopes and dreams. I had visited an orphanage back in Vietnam before; it was one spiritual moment that I realized Pediatric Nursing was my ultimate passion. As a Nursing student at UP, I am determined to continue my high education to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. I have a compassion for young children who suffer from illnesses and lack of care. It is an honor to be a part of the healthcare team to save young lives. My real happiness is when I get to provide emotional and physical support to children.
